Issue #123 Loop WP
Privacy Matters to Everyone!
Hi, friend. 👋
Welcome to Issue #123 of Loop WP!
Last week, I shared a fun feature that might be new to many of you: we're looking back at the “Top 10“ most popular newsletters from the last six months.
This week, we are starting a mini-series on WordPress Privacy, and yes, this matters even if you are outside the EU or don’t serve EU customers.
Privacy matters to everyone.
Let’s go! 👇
Privacy By Design
🧠 If you aren’t familiar with the concept of “Privacy by Design”, I discussed this as one of the two foundations of web design in WP Wednesdays Issue #103 (the old name for this newsletter).
⚡️ You can skip straight to the article if you prefer, and you really should read it if you aren’t familiar with the concept.
Using “Privacy by Design“in your processes means you must think before you build or design anything.
🚨 For example, instead of using Google reCaptcha, you should use something privacy-focused like Cloudflare Turnstile or hCaptcha, which I wrote about extensively in WP Wednesdays Issue #68. 👇
📝 We will return to this later in our privacy mini-series in another newsletter.
But first, I want to discuss WordPress and privacy specifically while briefly discussing GDPR now. 👇
First off, I am not a legal expert, so you should read the following links and investigate further:
EU & Cookies - EU Cookie Law
If you are a UK or EU-based website or if you serve content to these countries, then depending on the type of Cookies used on your website, you may have to display a Cookie Notice and a separate Cookie Policy.
🚨 Your website Cookie Policy should be separated from your Privacy Policy.
Since 2012, a cookie policy has been a legal requirement for most EU-based websites, depending on the type of cookies used on the website.
🍪 If you do not have a solution, install an app or use another third-party service such as CookieYes, CookieBot, or CookiePro.
These services can audit and identify all the cookies on your website.
I use Termageddon for my clients and me (it can also help you with CMP and Google Consent Mode, which we will discuss later in this series). 👇
🕵️ Once identified, non-essential cookies should be blocked from automatically loading before a website visitor consents to meet with compliance.
Lastly, depending on the types of data you need to track, you might want to consider GDPR-compliant analytics solutions like Fathom. 👇
Before You Go, friend
📢 My good friend (or I like to think he is 🤣) Paul Charlton has launched the WP Tuts Academy, and as a beta tester, I’ve been impressed; check it out now as it’s open to the public!
That’s it for this week 👋
⏭️ Next week, we will continue our mini-series on Privacy and WordPress as we look at how you can use and extend WordPress’s built-in Privacy Settings.
